If you’re like us, you’ve probably noticed your inbox being flooded with emails from businesses telling you how they’ve updated their privacy policy. It’s not just pure coincidence that they’re all doing it at the same time. It’s down to the new GDPR regulations, which have been put in place. But, what is GDPR?

What Is GDPR?

On May 25, 2018, new regulations went into place within the EU regarding data collection. You can view the complete overview here, but let us give you the jist of things…

Basically, what GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) does is protect users, who enter their details, from unauthorised data collection. If your website is collecting and storing data, the individual providing the information needs to be aware of it and also give permission before you actually collect their info.

That’s not all. Along with providing permission to collect data, the new rules require you to give users access to their data, if they wish to view it and have it removed if requested.

How Can I make my website GDPR Compliant?

If you have a website, then making your website GDPR compliant is a must. Otherwise, you could be liable to prosecution. So, here’s how to ensure your website doesn’t land you in hot water…

Tick Box on all Forms
The first thing you need to look at is adding a way for users to agree with you collecting their data. The easiest way to do this is by adding a required checkbox to the forms of your website. With the added tickbox, users will only be able to submit their details when they agree to your terms and conditions. Just be sure to set the checkbox as ‘required’.

Requesting Data
It’s not only the agreement side of things, which are changing. GDPR also requires that users are able to request access to their data at any time. To handle this, we recommend keeping your database up-to-date and ensuring your comply if any subscriber asks to view or even remove themselves from your database.

Privacy Policy
Lastly, you need to ensure your privacy policy is amended and works alongside the GDPR regulations. Your privacy policy also needs to be easily accessible. We recommend adding this to the footer of your website.
